Florida, as we all know, has plenty of sunlight, most of the time, but unlike Californians, which developed many projects in order to use it, they seem to have just forgotten about the enormous sunpower potential they have. The ‘Sunshine State’ has finally awaken recently and decided to build the world’s largest college-based solar farm.
State lawmakers are ready to allocate $8.5 million to the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) in Ft. Myers for a project of a 16-acre solar farm inside their campus. The construction is set to begin in October and be finished next summer, and is expected to provide 100% of the energy needs in the whole campus.
This project could save the university over $22 million over the next 30 years, so besides doing the right thing for the environment, solar energy is a very important economical factor for the educational institution.
