The Global Seed Vault Stores Plant Seed Just In Case
By Nick March 15, 2008

Forced by the disappearing of plant species, scientists have struggled to find a solution for that. The solution is the Global Seed Vault which had its opening a couple of weeks ago. The vault it’s located in Norway and it was build 500 feet under the permafrost and it stores millions of seeds from the entire world. It was created just in case natural disasters and human errors might lead to the disappereance of plants.
Many efforts are made across the entire globe to preserve several plant species - in France they preserve coffee plants, in Belgium bananas, in Nigeria cassava and in Mexico corn species. But there is also a problem - many plants, the majority from the tropics, that don’t produce seeds that can be stored.

The Global Seed Vault was designed to withstand to eventual hurricanes, earthquakes and even terrorist attacks. This is the best solution that the United Nations International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources came up until now because the vault can store crucial seeds which might disappear because of global warming and the changes suffered by the environment.
