The General Electric’s Green Beijing Olympics, 2008

By Nick August 11, 2008

The General Electric Olympic games, wait, I mean Beijing Olympic games got off to a big bang last Friday with probably the best opening ceremony, ever. With the start of the Olympics, companies from every sector are touting their sponsorship and involvement in this years’ Olympic games. While many companies have big investments in place to get their name in front of a billion Chinese people, no other company is more involved this year than General Electric, and part of their involvement is comes from their green efforts, coined GE Ecomagination, for the Olympics. Here’s a look at GE’s green efforts showcasing in Beijing, and probably the rest of the world’s cities soon to come.

General Electric’s involvement

Well, first off, the massive conglomerate owns NBC, who is making a massive bet on the Olympics by broadcasting it more hours than are actually possible according to modern time standards(they have in on multiple channels at a time, it’s not magic). It’s paid off so far with the highest rating Opening Ceremony and massive online Olympics traffic.

Staying with the media arm, GE has launched a little media blitz with its “EcoMagination” campaign, which showcases 74 of GE’s new eco friendly products for water, transportation, energy, lighting, the home, and finances. These products are all pretty impressive, especially since they cover so many different sectors.

But for actual work greening the Olympics, GE has been working with Olympic officials for years now developing plans for the Olympics this year, only a small handful of which are really green or notable to be really eco friendly. They can all be found on an interactive map of the Beijing Olympics site.

  • Notably, 130 GE wind turbines are being used in the Beijing area to help power the Olympics, 100 of which will be enrolled at the Shangyi wind farm just outside of Beijing.
  • The iconic, Bejing National Stadium (pictured above), which hosts the opening and closing ceremonies along with a host of soccer games, runs an eco friendly water nanofiltration and recycling system to keep the pitch watered.
  • The BOCOG Building in downtown Beijing is the headquarters for all Olympic operations, and is powered by efficient General Electric LED lighting.
  • Final Word

Those three are the extent of General Electric’s actual green contributions to the Olympics site in Beijing. For more Green projects going on at the Olympics, Earth2Tech has a great list of 10 Clean tech companies greening the Olympics. While greening Beijing has a nice ring to it, especially considering their recent pollution problems and the fact that they’re working along side the UNEP, it’s hard not to think it’s not all just for show, but I applaud them for going in the right direction.

      Unbelievable…

Ge is pushing the China agenda hard in its coverage. I have seen more coverage of Chinese athletes than American athletes. They keep forcing their China agenda down our throats as they continue to layoff American workers. Wake up America and see that GE/NBC coverage is nothing more than a tool for them to sell us on the China is our friend politics that they are so heavily invested in.

Screw China, GE, NBC, and most of all Jeff Immelt
