Renewable 91 Octane Gasoline From Algae
By Nick June 1, 2008

Sapphire Energy announced that they have successfully used a breakthrough process to produce renewable 91 octane green gasoline, crude oil, from CO2, sunlight and algae. Jason Pyle, CEO and co-founder of the group, stated that Sapphire’s aim is to become ‘the world’s leading producer of renewable petrochemical products’, and their new achievement places them one step closer to it.
The high-value hydrocarbons they obtained using the new technique are chemically identical with the ones currently used by our energy infrastructure. One of the most important characteristics of this method is that the fuel doesn’t require planted fields to grow photosynthetic microorganisms, as the product is fully renewable.
