Radioactive Waste Converted Into Inert Substance
By Nick April 13, 2008

A group of Russian researchers in collaboration with the Israeli’s Environmental Energy Resources (EER) have developed a reactor that converts radioactive waste into inert byproducts. Although there were many who thought that this is not possible, Itschak Shrem from the Shrem, Fudim and Keiner, an investment company, announced the breakthrough at a press conference in Tel Aviv.
This new “product” could produce glass and “recyclable material for building and paving roads” and also Shrem said that from solid waste the reactor can provide clean energy which “can be used for just about anything”.
The inert byproduct results from a technology called Plasma Gasification Melting (PGM) that was developed by researchers from the Kurchatov Institute Research Center, the Radon Institute and Technion Institute (the first and the second from Russia and the third from Israel). PGM uses a technique based on high temperatures and low-radioactive energy in order to convert the waste.
According to Shrem, the EER reactor and his product are environmentally friendly therefore we should consider starting to clean up the after-effects of the production of nuclear power and weapons.
