Proof US Less concerned about Environment than rest of World
By Nick July 11, 2008
The number one economy, one of the most tech savvy cultures, widespread broadband access, world’s “most powerful” nation - All descriptions of the United States. When it comes to the environment though and our interest in it, as a nation, we frankly don’t seem to care - and I recently came upon some irrefutable truth.
While generalizing and stereotyping is easy and fun, this isn’t just an unsupported claim: Google! Google Trends is a Google tool measuring the search frequencies of words and phrases. It’s not completely flawless, but it’s reliable.
And, Google trends shows that the United States is not even in the top 10 for nations searching environment. Instead, Canada, India, and Philippines lead the list amongst other nations NOT including the US.
Well, maybe Americans use a different search term, right?… So checking out environmental we come in at #6, and rank at #7 for sustainability, but then drop back out of the top 10 for sustainable.
So there you have it: According to Google, the US obviously cares less about the environment than countries elsewhere in the world, which is pathetic since “we are suppose to be” the best at everything, and because of our shear size of population and internet availability. The Philippines > US when it comes to people seeking information on the environment? So much for #1…
