Park Official Arrested For Killing Gorillas
By Nick March 25, 2008

Honore Mashagiro, a member of the Congolese Nature Conservation Institute was arrested after claims that he organized the killing of ten rare mountain gorillas. The horrible events took place in the Virunga National Park, an area that is in a region where rebels have set up a base, on the eastern border of Congo.
Millions of refugees from Congo and Rwanda rely on charcoal, which is made of wood, for heating and cooking. So deforestation spreads more and more in these areas that host so rare animal species. The park is also home for over 350 of the world’s last mountain gorillas living in the wild. The conservation group Wildlife Direct, which manages the park, said the arrest was a positive sign of rooting out the corruption from the Democratic Republic of Congo at its highest levels.
