A Word on Travel Insurance for your Eco Friendly Travels

By Nick |September 5, 2008

I was contacted about doing a review on a travel insurance site, so for a quick break away from the green world:

When looking to travel, especially abroad, many people are opting to buy a travel insurance plan. While it may seem unnecessary to have yet another insurance coverage, it is a precaution more and more people are choosing to take. And, this precaution is getting less and less expensive as more companies are offering more and more various travel insurance packages that can better suit your specific needs.

For finding this travel insurance for your business trip, eco friendly backpacking tour, or gap year in the peace corps in South America, Money.co.uk can be your travel insurance portal. The site is a comparison engine that performs quick searches for travel insurance from a variety of companies. After choosing your destination country, type (annual, extended trip, single trip), age, and style (wintersports, backpacking, children, etc.) you are presented with the amount of medical coverage that is included with a quick rate quote.

The site indexes many different Insurance comapanies and coverage options, so there will be something for you. As far as quick, hassle free searches go, Money.co.uk ranks among the best when seeking out a travel insurance plan for your green, eco tourist getaway. Costa Rica perhaps?

Green Asphalt and Concrete: Eco Friendly Streets

By Nick |August 14, 2008

There have been several developments as of late relating to the greening of the world’s streets and highways with either asphalt and concrete. Lots of forgotten energy and materials goes into our roads and highways, which are just a bridge for more pollution, making recent developments with greener, more environmentally friendly asphalt and concrete more exciting.

Hilly country road

Air Pollution Free in Hengelo -Dutch Concrete paving stones

The recent green developments started in the Netherlands when the Dutch’s University of Twente developed a green concrete paving stone that converted the smog, acid rain causing nitrogen oxide into a nitrate, environmentally friendly concrete paving stones to reduce air pollutionwhich is not harmful for the environment in small quantities. Unfortunately, we use nitrates all the time in fertilizer, so it could potentially be toxic to humans or animals. The Dutch will be testing it with a grant in Hengelo and scientists will be evaluating it for widespread use.

Air Pollution Reducing Asphalt in Madrid

Engadget reports that Madrid has a similar plan in place with new asphalt that comparable to the Dutch’s concrete paving stones. Madrid’s asphalt, too, can convert nitrogen oxide from exhausts into less harmful oxides which can just be washed away with rainfall. This asphalt is suppose to be able to get rid of 90% of the nitrogen oxides in the air on a sunny day since it relies on sunlight to work at capacity. Ironic that global warming induced radiation is helpful in combating air pollution. But this is a great development and has a lot of potential.

Laying Cool Green Asphalt is Cool

Earlier this year, the Matter Network discusses how laying asphalt while it is cool instead of hot can save 7 times as much energy during the process. With thousands of miles of US roads getting paved each year, that is some serious energy savings. The problem lies in the fact that US engineers, unlike those overseas, are only familiar with heated laying techniques and measures to predict how well a road will perform. With no cool laying guidelines, it’s not realistic for cool laying techniques to be used, yet. So after some control tests headed by University of Wisconsin civil engineering professor Bahia, cool asphalt may become cooler in the civil engineering world thus allowing us to green our roads and environments.

The General Electric’s Green Beijing Olympics, 2008

By Nick |August 11, 2008

The General Electric Olympic games, wait, I mean Beijing Olympic games got off to a big bang last Friday with probably the best opening ceremony, ever. With the start of the Olympics, companies from every sector are touting their sponsorship and involvement in this years’ Olympic games. While many companies have big investments in place to get their name in front of a billion Chinese people, no other company is more involved this year than General Electric, and part of their involvement is comes from their green efforts, coined GE Ecomagination, for the Olympics. Here’s a look at GE’s green efforts showcasing in Beijing, and probably the rest of the world’s cities soon to come.

SunTable launches for $2,200, not good for Beer Pong

By Nick |August 8, 2008

Engadget just reported that the eco friendly not so splendid SunTable is now officially launched, and shipping for $2,200. As its name suggests, the table is made of solar panels which generates electricity to be stored in a 120 volt battery on the table. The table provides 150 watts of power (a few hours of laptop usage) and recharges in four hours of sunlight.

Solar panel sun table for beer pong

While the table is kind of interesting, it’s pretty pointless for $2,200. It has a nice design, is very sturdy and durable, and could really impress your fellow high rolling friends, but it’s definitely not worth the all eco fuss. It seems to be too short for it’s only practical usage as an outdoor beer pong table, and considering it’s price is equivalent to 146 cases of cheap beer (3500 beers!) it does not seem economical enough to serve its party, beer pong, tippy cup purpose.
