Organisms Living Three Miles Under The Surface

By Nick May 30, 2008

A new species of extremophiles (living creatures that have their growing environment in mediums hostile to other forms of life) has been discovered in Newfoundland, Canada, and they are deepest-dwelling organisms known so far.

The single-cell star is part of the Archaea group and subsists on methane pillows located under 2.8 miles of water and one mile of ground. The previous record was almost half that distance. Their unicellular bodies have been found in a sediment rock extracted by a research ship for tests, and scientists analyzing them concluded that they are able to survive off the methane gas released by hydrocarbons.

Theories about how they got in that rock are beginning to be emitted, the most likely being that they were dragged by water currents or that they lived there ever since the Earth’s birth. No matter the conclusions they’ll reach, this discovery remains one of the most important in the biology area.
