New pig species found by Dutch scientist

By Nick November 14, 2007

In the German journal Bonner Zoologische Beitrage we have read about an article written by the Dutch scientist Marc van Roosmalen, who states that he found a new wild pig species somewhere in the Amazon forest. The pig has a weight of 90 pounds and is 4 feet long. It’s related to the Pecari tajacau or collared peccary, 1 to 1.2 million years old species, as the DNA analysts found out.

The scientists said that they need to do a lot more of research to see if the species is really new. Roosmalen wants to conserve the Amazonian wild life because of the growing of the sawmills around Nova Aripuana, where the new peccary is to be found.

Unlike other species, the wild pig travels in small groups which makes them vulnerable to the hunters. That is probably the reason why the species was so hard to find.
