Motorola Introduces Fuel Cell Alternative Power
By Nick February 14, 2008

Mobile World Congress, one of the most important mobile event in the world held in Barcelona, Spain every year, brought us some green news. We present you Motorola’s alternative power solutions which consists of fuel cells and reflow batteries. These ideas will be used for wireless and high speed broadband technologies.
Motorola is the first to demonstrate the use of fuel cell by powering a WiMAX base station which operated on liquid fuel without onsite hydrogen storage requirement.
Fred Wright, senior vice-president at one of Motorola’s subsidiary, says that after “the success of the solar and wind powered cell site trials conducted in the UK and in Namibia, Motorola continues to develop technology that elevates the growing need of operators for alternative power sources from a theoretical possibility to practical and commercially viable solutions.”
He continued by saying that the market’s demanding for power solutions is higher and higher and its indispensable - “Whether it’s because of a shortage of generating capacity or a lack of power grid infrastructure, the ultimate needs are very similar. Motorola’s alternative power offerings serve the needs of all operators irrespective of the technology they are using.”
Also, Motorola says that fuel cell and reflow batteries can be an answer for radio networks, such as TETRA, used in public safety environments. We are very happy that the world of mobiles are willing to become green.
