Marriott Hotels to Go Green, Eco Friendly

By Nick July 22, 2008

Marriott Hotels had a recent press release stating their new initiatives to make their operations greener and more eco friendly. Marriott makes a living as a business hotel hosting meetings and conferences of all kinds, and with a lot of people, they generate a lot of waste and consume a lot of energy and resources. Most of the changes at Marriott’s business meetings are simple and subtle, but they will make a sizable impact collectively when they are implemented across the chain’s 2,300 North American hotel properties.

Here are some of the changes:

  • All writing pads will be from recycled paper and products
  • Pens will be Bic Ecolutions - biodegradable and made from recycled products
  • Pitchers of water in meeting rooms, not bottled water
  • Recycled box lunch containers and biodegradable utensils
  • Food that can be donated to America’s Second harvest food bank network

The release also highlights a host of other impressive awards that Marriott has received for being a socially responsible and environmentally friendly hotel chain. From receiving the most energy star ratings and developing LEED certified hotels to supporting the Amazon rainforest, Marriott has evidently gone out of its way to be a leader in eco friendly travel and sustainability.

That earns a thumbs up from me, and another consideration when booking hotels in the future. Here is the entire Marriott press release.

It’s great to see big business making these sorts of moves, but one area they often forget is when it comes to their websites. I’d love to see a company like Marriott lead the way and host their websites at a solar powered data centre.
