Nowadays hydrogen fuel cells are drawing more and more attention because they are greener than fossil fuels which means they don’t pollute and the global warming could be somehow stopped. Some drawbacks of the use of these fuel cells are the costs of manufacturing and their efficiency.
According to QuantumSphere Inc. the coating of the hydrogen made of nanoparticles might be key for the decreasing of the costs and the improvement of the efficiency. These nanoparticles are high catalysts and they might increase the efficiency of the electrolysis which is the effect that generates hydrogen from water. Also, there is a chance that they could remove the necessity of expensive materials in the fabrication of the hydrogen fuel cells.
Kevin Maloney, president, CEO, co-founder of QuantemSphere, says that their technique could be applied by everyone, everywhere: “instead of switching 170,000 gas stations over to hydrogen, using our electrodes could enable consumers to make their own hydrogen, either in the garage or right on the vehicle”, and also he wanted to underline the efficiency of their technique: “our nanoparticle-coated electrodes make electrolysers efficient enough to provide hydrogen on demand from a tank of distilled water in your car.”
QuantumSphere reports show that using the “magical powers” of the nanoparticle coating, the efficiency could be increased by 85 percent which would be an amazing rate if you look at the 10 percent rate efficiency by 2010 proposed by the Department of Energy.
The company is not at their first project - it seems like an U.S. battery manufacturer developed a non-rechargeable battery using this nanoparticle technology and it’s rumored that they will unveil it by the end of 2008. In addition, QuantumSphere announced that they are capable of improving the nickel-metal batteries in order to be better than the lithium-ion batteries.
The plans of the QuantemSphere are to reach agreements with multiple manufacturers - their partners will have to provide equipment for the home electrolysers and they will have to substitute the materials of the electrodes. Now, these are made of platinum and they will change it with stainless-steel.
If it would be as easy as they say, this would almost to good to be true, but it’s possible that they could live up to their expectations and if they said that it can be done then why we would not believe them?
