Laboratory Animals Could Be Replaced By Robots
By Nick February 17, 2008

It was about time that someone had to start taking care of the laboratory animals. Two government agencies - the National Institute of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency - are looking to replace the animals with high-speed automated robots to carry out chemical tests. This two agencies say that this is only a five year research program, but they expect it to become a long-term approach. They say that by using this robots they will reduce costs, time and the number of animals which are used to test chemicals. Dr Francis Collins, the Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, said that this new tests will also be more accurately than the tests done on animals. The robots will make tests on indvidual cells from different organisms of animals or humans. Unfortunately scientists think that it will take long until animals won’t be used anymore for tests, and actually they don’t really know if this is going to happen.
