Japanese fleet hunts humpback whales for research

Humpback Whale

Is said that the Japanese fleet is hunting whales in the name of science. Four ships are ready to sail from Japan to hunt 50 humpback whales, but it is assumed that they will kill around 1000 whales.

This is one of the biggest Japanese whale hunting missions. The fleet will run in the South Pacific until April. The leading ship is the Nissin Maru which weighs about 8000 tonne and has a crew of about 239 men.

Due to the environmental activists, the launch of the fleet was very hard. The activists stated that this activity is a way of keeping the whaling industry alive and that the research is only an excuse. Some of the environmental groups will go along whit the hunting ships on this mission. The fleet will also have observation boats.

Nearly 40 years ago the humpback whales were hunted to extinction. One of this whales weighs around 40 tonne and is about 48 feet long.

I presume that the research is not the only reason for killing 1000 humpback whales. You could say I’m wrong, but think about it more.

I think the activists should continue to campaign against this research in order to prevent the extinction of the whales.

I think if they kill the whales, all of the whales will become extinct.

I think this problem is really interesting. I love whales and am against whaling but when I was in Japan ( i also speak japanese) it was hard to find whale meat in the south and the Tokyo area. It seems it is much harder to find than before. The other interesting thing is, they tell the people they don’t hunt around the Japan Sea but what I suspect they do is go up north near the arctic to find whales..ho hum,..
