India Proposes Use Of Alternative Fuel Source

By Nick June 9, 2008

Already retailed for more than $100 dollars per barrel, the incessant hike of oil prices in the world market brings a myriad of effects on oil-dependent countries, with most of it tilting on the negative. As a raw material, the high rise of oil has resulted in the upsurge of prices of basic consumer commodities including energy use.

In printing the blueprints of an underpinning that would alleviate the aftermath of oil price hikes, India turns its eyes on a viable source of alternative fuel—a plant that grows on wastelands.

Jatropha curcas, a plant that can find nourishment even in the most sandy, gravelly and saline earth, produces a biofuel ideal for use as substitute to the conventional one. With its seeds crushed and the extracted oil processed, the jatropha oil can be utilized as fuel for diesel cars, and the residue byproduct as biomass to fuel electric power plants.

Researchers in India have channeled their efforts to making the most out of the efficiency of the biodiesel. Previously, they have experimented with three Mercedes cars fueled by jatropha diesel, and the optimistic effects provided momentum in the colossal task ahead of them.

Breaking grounds in India, the jatropha oil has now piqued the interest of many Asian countries.
