Hydrogen Fuel Cells The Next Generation Energy For Cell Phones

MOTOSLVR L7 Hydrogen Fuel Cell

The International Consumer Electronics Show or shortly CES, it’s a trade-only show and it’s considered one of the biggest technology shows in the world. It takes place in Las Vegas every January and the first show was held in June, 1967 in New York.

Angstrom Power is a company which develops fuel cells, it has its headquarters in Vancouver, Canada and it was founded in 2001. Now, they are focusing on hydrogen-based fuel cells and are developing innovative fuel cell prototypes for all kinds of portable devices.

This year at CES, Angstrom Inc., impressed us with a hydrogen fuel cell for the MOTOSLVR L7 handset. The hydrogen mobile phone looks exactly like a regular one because the Canadian company also focused onto designing the batteries to fit perfectly into the cell phones.

According to Angstrom Power, these hydrogen fuel cells last twice longer as the standard lithium-ion batteries and with a recharge time of 10 minutes it surely can pose a threat for all battery-manufacturers. For now, the company is testing the L7 for a six-month period and if all goes right they will start shipping immediately.Still there are some setbacks and probably the biggest is the absence of hydrogen refuel stations which aren’t spread worldwide.

According to Stuart Robinson, Director of Handset Component Technologies at Strategy Analytics Ltd, these innovative batteries represent a better solution for mobile energy and he believes that current lithium-ion batteries are not efficient enough to match future energy demands. Robinson expects Angstrom Inc. to manufacture and sell over a billion products by 2010 which may be a little too ambitious, but you never know.

Not only that the hydrogen fuel cells are greener, but if it were to believe what Angstrom Power say, are performing much better and are more efficient than what current technology provides.

Wait a minute, hydrogen fuel cells are NOT batteries. They use hydrogen gas and oxygen gas to produce water. Where are you going to store all the hydrogen and water? I think it wuld be a bad idea to have super-high pressure vessels embedded in the phones. And not to mention the water dripping everywhere and on the electrical equipment.

And recharging? Didn’t the article just say that they needed refueling stations for the hydrogen? I think that’s a bit more troublesome than simply plugging in a charger to a socket or car.

They aren’t the same class of devices as batteries. They are simply electricity-producing engines, and quite expensive due to platinum catalysts. You can’t really compare them to current battery technology.

I have also been confused about how they will be recharged… Will electrolysis be used with an external power source to split up the H2 and the O again, or will the h2 and O tanks be “filled” up?
