Human Activities Destroy Ocean Waters
By Nick February 20, 2008

An interesting report was presented at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) about the interaction between humans and world’s oceans. The report was compiled by Benjamin Halpern and his team-mates at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis in Santa Barbara, California and it was finished in four years.
According to this research, about 40% of waters are heavily affected by humans activities like fishing. Marine ecosystems are also endangered by global warming, pollution, coastal runoff and oil rigs, and these are just a few of the 17 harmful anthropogenic activities.
The new oceans map was named the “map of misery” and it was determined with the contribution of different sources like satellite imagery, scientific buoys and shipping maps. The map was put together by marine scientists who made various calculations depending on different ecosystems.
If their estimations are correct than the ecosystems in more than 40% of oceans water are compromised if no measures against climate change are taken as soon as possible. This is one of the most important reports about the health of our planet and if this doesn’t draw the attention of world leaders than nothing can.
