Green Web Surfing with Search and Nature Wallpapers
By Nick September 15, 2008
Innovative green entrepreneurs have come up with a variety of ways to save the earth online, with simply, a click or query. So whether it’s by entertaining yourself aesthetically, or by very slightly modifying your homepage or search habits, it’s getting easier to green your computing practices by surfing the web.
Eco Friendly, Green Search
Google and yahoo searches can actually be very green. How? Well google allows web developers to feature Google search on their sites in exchange for the advertising revenue generated. So several greentrepreneurs started Google search pages that donate the advertising revenues to various environmental charities.
Treehugger came out with a list awhile ago that ranked the best green search engines. With a couple of these coming from the Trehugger list, I feel like these are the best:
- EcoSearch.org - It donates 100% of Google search profits to environmental charities.
- GreenSeng.com - Google search results are offset with renewable energy certificates to keep the searches green
- Ecocho - For every 1000 searches, they plant trees to offset the carbon.
- Treehoo- Once again, Treehoo plants trees to offset emissions with 70% of profits
Care and Click Nature Wallpapers
Care and Click is a newish German site that features aesthetically pleasing wallpapers from big time artists who happen to be green friendly. How the site is green, is that when people download the beautiful wallpapers, sponsors for the site donate 10 cents for the download which is in turn donated to eco friendly causes and what not. Clever huh?
So when beautifying your desktop, or searching for your favorite eco friendly computer, use these green friendly web surfing tips to reduce your carbon footprint.
