Going green at summer music festivals

By Nick July 8, 2008

There are a growing number of green travel options available nowadays, and one great summer green travel opportunity lies in the legendary music festivals held at parks and fields all over the US. The jam band crowd of the 2000s is environmentally conscious and concerned, and their music festivals are starting to follow suit.

Just recently, Rothbury Music Festival took place, arguably this summer’s #1 music festival because of its loaded lineup. Even with 50,000 estimated attendees, Rothbury committed to being completely sustainable. Rothbury had a massive list of green initiatives that succeeded and somewhat failed this year, including…

  • Required biodegradable cups, plates, and utensils from all vendors
  • Bins for separating waste - compost, recycles, and trash - everywhere
  • Generators run on biodiesel ranging from 20-90% bio products
  • Emphasis on using water fill up stations with reusable bottles and jugs
  • Portable ash trays!

Earlier this year in March, arguably the other “best music festival of the year” took place which was also 100% carbon neutral. Langerado, which takes place at a Seminole reservation in Florida. Some stats for Langerado

  • 37% of Carbon offset by visitors when purchasing tickets
  • Diverted 78,000 pounds of trash from the landfills in favor of recycling
  • Lots of organic vendors, and vendors offering biodegradable products

With these two being among some of the few that are committed to being totally sustainable and environmentally friendly, other big festivals sill acknowledge the importance for being green even though they do not totally commit to the cause yet - see Wakarusa and Bonnaroo

The trend to going green amongst music festivals is huge, and it creates a great green travel opportunity for your summer road trip if you like amazing, live music like Dave Matthews Band, Ben Folds, John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Kanye West, Death Cab for Cutie, Widespread Panic, Umphrey’s McGee and more.
