G-8 2008 Tokyo Recap: Climate Change, 2050
By Nick July 9, 2008
So what happened at this year’s ever-glorified G-8 summit in Tokyo? I would guess a lot of politics and meet and greets, but for actual discussions the focus seemed to be on the world economy. Also, climate change was fortunately the hot topic of the conference again.

The G-8 world leaders came to a consensus and agreement as well that Bush even agreed to. The deal: All G-8 countries must cut their greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2050. Not a staggering deal, but fairly ambitious nonetheless.
The hot topic is actually that Bush agreed to include the US in the deal. But not only did he “just agree,” he praised the G-8s climate change efforts. It was a surprising move considering his rejection of the Kyoto treaty not too long ago due to its low requirements for emerging industrial economies like China and India. He has, however, made ure to mention that all major economies must be included, which is probably an attempt to shift the pressure to world second leading greenhouse emitting China and booming India.
On another note, the G-8 isn’t all just for show, they actually act the part to by moving around in an eco friendly hydrogen fleet. While surely it is just for show to make them seem committed to the cause, I think they may be serious now, so it’s much appreciated amongst the green community. Thank you G-8.
