Biowave Produces Electricity From Ocean Power

By Nick May 17, 2008

Designers and engineers often use biomimicry (designs based on natural systems) to solve problems and come up with ideas for the products or structures they are working on. BioPower Systems is an Australian company that used it to develop Biowave, an ocean power system that uses the motion of the water to generate electricity.

The system mimics the motion of plants from the bottom of the sea, constantly oscillating backwards and forward and looks like three moving balloons. connected together by their ‘root’. A prototype of this device is currently being tested off the coast of Tasmania and will inform the company how a large scale system would be best implemented.

The large scale model will ensure energy to Flinders and King islands, and afterwards, if successful, to the entire state of Victoria. After solar energy and wind power, seems that we could shortly have a new way of ecologically producing electricity: ocean power.

with every Australian capital city (except Canberra but who really cares about them) being on the coast, this has amazing potential.
i really hope the gov funds this well.
