A Floating World Coming To Northern England
By Nick April 30, 2008

I think everybody remembers the Masdar City, the first project of a zero-waste city, that Foster&Partners designed it for Abu Dhabi. Since Masdar was announced, we saw other projects like Auroville, in India and Dongtan, in China. Now, England gets is share of zero-carbon city as RIBA announced the winner for the visitor center at the new Brockholes Wetland and Woodland Nature Reserve in Preston.

The Adam Khan Architects project is called “A Floating World”, the name coming from the fact that the zero-carbon buildings will be built on an island of floating pontoons. For the buildings, the fabrication will be made off-site (which makes it prefabrication, greener because it consists of prefab materials) and probably the most important thing is that the cit will sustain itself by generating energy from the site.

The inhabitants will not get bored as the floating world will feature cafe, shops, gallery, education areas and meeting rooms. A Floating World is part of the 59 million Newlands Scheme, a project that will turn 900 hectares in community woodland and green space.
